What Is Physical Abuse?
“Physical abuse” describes any physical harm or injury inflicted upon you by your partner or family member. This abuse can encompass any violence towards you including, but not limited to punching, kicking, pushing, or slapping It can further escalate to the use of weapons, such as knives, guns, or other objects or toxic substances, resulting in severe harm and life changing injuries. It is important to recognise that physical abuse can also include sexual assault or rape, which are additional forms of physical abuse. This is deeply alarming and the urgent need for support, understanding, and resources to address and prevent such instances of violence is imperative
What Are the Signs of Physical Abuse?
Recognising the signs of physical abuse can be challenging as they are not always visible. While bruises, cuts, and physical injuries may be the most obvious indicators, it is crucial to be aware of other forms of domestic abuse. These can include controlling behaviours, emotional abuse and financial abuse. For instance, if a partner, or family member is exerting control over what you wear, who you see, or what you do, and you feel afraid to challenge them, it is likely that you are experiencing domestic abuse. By understanding the various manifestations of abuse, we can better support and protect those affected. Some symptoms of physical abuse may include but are not limited to:
- Visible signs of injury, such as bruises, burns, or cuts, on the body. Often a perpetrator will deliberately cause these injuries on parts of the body which are not visible due to clothing. Wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather such as long sleeves in the summer to cover up injuries is a significant sign of physical abuse.
- Frequent unexplained injuries, with inconsistent explanations provided for their occurrence.
- There may be evidence of a pattern of injuries, such as marks from a hand or belt or burns in the shape of an object.
- The individual may exhibit understandable wariness of physical contact, displaying a flinching or defensive response to sudden movements.
- Changes in behaviour, such as withdrawal, or depression, may be noticed.
- Isolation from friends and family.

How Non-Molestation and Occupation Orders Can Help
The UK has a zero tolerance to domestic abuse. Under the Family Law Act of 1996, and the Domestic Abuse Act 2020 non-molestation orders can be obtained against a partner, or anyone who is an associated person, to forbid them from committing violence, threatening violence, or harassing you or a relevant child. The court can also order your abuser to stay away from your home, place of work, or any other places that you frequently visit. Occupation orders can include provisions that require the abuser to vacate your home entirely or stay away from certain areas of the house.
If you believe you need protection from your partner or family member, talk to a solicitor first to discuss your options. Parfitt Cresswell can provide you with tailored advice and representation in court. This can provide you with protection for up to 12 months and can be extended if necessary. Whilst it is important to report all incidents of violence to the police, obtaining immediate protection from the Family Court is extremely important.
